Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter for Friday. I hope you’ve had a very
good week, it’s been busy on Look North as usual. Thank you for all your
comments and messages on the programme and letting us know about what’s going
on in our area. If you’ve got something to comment on, or if you want to let us
know about a story for Look North you can always get in touch the usual way by
email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] And if you’ve got any interesting pictures to show
before the weather, I’d like to see them, send them to us by email or put a
hard copy in the post and you could see it on the programme.

Coming up on tonight’s Look North, we'll bring you the decision on whether the
Chief of Humberside Fire Brigade is going ahead with the biggest reorganisation
since the brigade was formed. We'll find out if 4 stations are to close.

We'll talk to GPs who have agreed to ring up patients accused of wasting
hospital time by turning up at A&E with things like sore throats.

As up to three thousand Polish workers have registered to vote in next months
local elections, we look at what it could mean for Lincolnshire's political
landscape.

As Hull City edge closer to playing in the Premiership next year, we'll take a
look at Reading to find out how the Royals survived in the top flight.

And we'll be looking at where the Children in Need money you donated last year
has been spent.

Of course we’ll have the weekend forecast today from Lisa Gallagher. That’s all
on Look North at half past six on BBC One tonight. I hope you can join me then.

Terminal 5

Well I mentioned this in the letter when it opened, and I hope I didn’t jinx
it, but Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 5 has had a less than smooth opening.
The latest set back is that the expected moving of 60 arrivals and 60
departures per day to the new terminal has now been delayed. Terminal 5 won’t
now take on the extra workload by the anticipated date, due to the teething
problems which include major baggage handling difficulties.
If you’re planning to jet out of the country this year then good luck, and I
hope it goes smoother than for some poor souls. If you’re departing from the
new Terminal 5 then you might do well to keep a tight grip on your suitcase!

Still working at 90

I saw this in the news today, and it shows how life is changing as we get
older. According to the office for national statistics, the number or people
who are “economically active” over the age of 80 has increased by 40% since
1999. By economically active they mean still working and earning money.
There are now 21,000 working on way past retirement age in Britain, and some
are working into their 90s even! The obvious question that comes to mind is why
would you want to? But many of us are deciding we haven’t had enough of working
life and decide to carry on.
A recent survey of 55 year olds found that money isn’t the main motivation for
staying in work, in fact 57% continued to work because they enjoyed their jobs.
If you’ve got something to say on that, let me know. I’m not sure I’ll be
presenting Look North in another 30 years time, but it certainly seems many
people aren’t giving up the day job just yet, despite getting on in years.

Instruments

Just before I finish for today, a new report has revealed that many musical
instruments learned in schools are dominated by one sex or the other. No great
surprise there to be honest, but apparently the most heavily “gendered”
instruments are the harp and flute which are dominated by girls, and the
electric and bass guitars which are largely the domain of boys.
Possible reasons for this are size and pitch having an impact, with larger and
deeper instruments being favoured by males, and smaller and higher pitched
instruments being picked up by girls. I think peer pressure and stereotypes
probably have a lot to do with it, and it’s interesting that this research has
been done. Does it really matter if we have equality in musical instruments?
Obviously some people feel strongly that it does. If you’re interested in
knowing the most popular instrument overall, it’s the violin.

Well that’s it from me for today. Don’t forget if you want to get in touch with
me then drop me a line at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Have a very good day, enjoy your
weekend, and don’t forget to watch the programme tonight at half past six on
BBC One.

Bye for now

Peter
