Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter for Thursday. I hope you’re having a
good day, and I hope you can join me for tonight’s Look North at half past six
on BBC One as always. Coming up on the programme tonight, we'll be at a protest
march against the possible closure of Hull's citizen's advice bureau.

We'll be covering the sentencing of six men who beat a Louth man into a coma.

How many teachers in Lincolnshire are off sick due to stress? We'll investigate
the findings of a new BBC report.

The man who walked out of Lincoln Crown Court before hearing his sentence
earlier this week, will be sentenced today. We’ve been covering that story on
the programme this week of course.

We’ll hear the story of a man from Cleethorpes who keeps receiving gas bills
for thousands of pounds despite only owning a single gas fire.

And we'll investigate whether Hull is enjoying a feel good factor with the
success of the city's football team. As you saw on the programme last night,
Tigers fans are daring to dream of promotion to the top flight for the first
time.

And of course we’ll have the detailed weather forecast as always. Don’t miss
that at half past six tonight on BBC One.

Alzheimer’s

Now that we’re all living longer the subject of Alzheimer’s disease is
increasingly in the news, and I’ve mentioned it a few times in the letter. Well
the latest research out from the US suggests that if you’re a heavy drinker or
smoker, you’re more likely to develop the disease earlier than those who don’t
drink or smoke.
A certain high risk gene also plays a large part in deciding whether you’ll
succumb to the illness, and also those with high cholesterol in their early 40s
are at higher risk. There’s a lot to think about there.
Research shows that drinking and smoking are two of the most preventable risk
factors for Alzheimer’s, and reducing both of those could substantially delay
the onset of the disease, and cut down the overall number of sufferers at any
one time.
People who drink more than two drinks a day developed Alzheimer’s five years
earlier, and those who smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day developed the
condition two years earlier than those who don’t drink or smoke. As I said,
it’s something that always seems to be in the news and on the television these
days, and it’s interesting to see how our habits can influence when we get the
disease, and there are some things you can do to delay the onset and stay
healthy.

Moon Rock

Well it’s been something discussed for many years, and I remember when I was
young some people used to think we’d be doing it by now, but scientists claim
living on the moon could one day be a reality.
Researchers have demonstrated that plants can grow in crushed rock very much
like that found on the moon, with no need for plant food. The key was adding
certain types of bacteria to the rock which allowed the plants to thrive. The
bacteria drew nutrients out of the rocks, such as potassium, which the plants
were then able to use.
I think this is one of those stories that I’ll have to say I’ll believe when I
see it happen, but once again people are dreaming of living on the moon.

Youngest Inventor

If you’ve ever thought about patenting an invention but never got around to it,
you’d better get a move on because one young boy is starting very early. A five
year old boy from Derbyshire is believed to be the youngest person to patent an
idea after inventing a new type of broom to help his dad sweeping up.
Invented when he was just three, the broom has a coarse head to sweep up bigger
debris, and a smaller brush behind to pick up the fine dust. That’s incredible,
he was just three years old when he came up with the idea.
Apparently he was inspired by Wallace and Gromit, and an inventor from
children’s TV series Balamory. Well done to him, and if you have an idea that
you’ve always wanted to patent, if a five year old boy can do it then so can
you!
I wonder if in a few years time we’ll all be using double headed brushes to
sweep up our floors and driveways…

Well that’s it from me for today. Don’t forget to get in touch about anything
going on in your area you think we should know about, you can email in on
[EMAIL PROTECTED] And as always if you’ve got a comment you want to make on any
of our stories, drop us a line and let us know what you think, and your comment
could be read out on the programme.

Enjoy the rest of your day, I hope you can join me on the programme tonight at
half past six on BBC One.

Bye for now

Peter
