Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter for Monday. I hope you’re ready for
the start of a new week, and if you did anything over the weekend then I hope
it went very well.

Coming up on Look North tonight, food prices are rising at a faster rate than
ever. The cost of a loaf of bread has risen by almost 30 pence in the last year
and we'll find out what impact that's having on shoppers and local food
producers.

Police in Boston have been targeting drug dealers. After a series of high
profile raids, we'll be finding out how they hope to tackle the town's heroin
problem.

We’ll also hear about plans to get rid of the flood warning sirens in
Lincolnshire, proposals which have angered residents who say they were saved by
the sirens in last summer's floods.

The Hull and Humber Clipper has arrived in Santa Cruz, California. We'll hear
from the crew about how they're feeling ahead of the start of the next leg of
the round the world race.

And it's the glitziest evening in the TV calendar. Last night's BAFTA awards
saw all the stars of the small screen on the red carpet. We'll have a special
behind the scenes report.

And we’ll have the weather forecast as always, that’s all coming up at the
usual time of half past six on BBC One. I hope you’ll join me then.

Baftas

Well as I just mentioned, last night was the Bafta Television Awards ceremony
in London. The BBC Three comedy series Gavin and Stacey was one of the big
winners, taking the audience award, voted for by the public. The programme’s
co-writer and actor James Corden also won best comedy performance.
The Best Entertainment Performance award went to Harry Hill, for his TV Burp,
which I enjoy very much. The highest accolade of the night went to that old
stalwart of British television, Bruce Forsyth. Brucie was awarded the Academy
Fellowship in recognition of his “outstanding body of work.” It seems like he’s
been around forever, and of course he’s still going strong. Well done to him,
and if you want to see more from the Baftas, our very own Hannah Moffat was
there and will have a report on the programme tonight, adding a little bit of
Look North glamour to the red carpet no doubt.

Quitting

New research has revealed that as many as four in ten workers are considering
quitting their jobs in the next year. Lack of motivation, unreasonable
workloads, feeling underpaid, and a lack of career path are all factors
apparently. Around half of employees said they felt they hadn’t been supported
beyond their initial induction, and more than a quarter felt unsupported by
their managers.
Of course the idea of a job for life is something you don’t really hear about
these days so I’m not really surprised people are often on the look out for
something new. Without support and effective feedback, the report says staff
are likely to “drift and depart” rather than stay engaged.
De-motivation was more common in larger organisations of over 5,000 people, and
highest among public sector workers. That’s not a very rosy picture for the
work place, but then if worker’s aren’t supported it’s hardly surprising that
they’ll leave, and in that respect I don’t think this survey really tells us
anything new, does it? But that’s the latest research, if you’re not motivated
at work you won’t stay “engaged”.

Bond

He has the looks, the women, and of course he has the car, or does he? The new
James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, has been hit by a rather embarrassing
accident with one of the glamorous cars intended to appear on screen.
The film makers only managed to get hold of a single Aston Martin DBS for
shooting, but while it was being driven to the scene by a stunt driver, of all
people, the car crashed in heavy rain and plunged into Lake Garda in Italy.
Now that’s bad enough given that the car is obscenely expensive and the only
one of its type available for the film, but the stunt driver must be very red
faced after that. He was rescued and taken to hospital with minor injuries, but
the car wasn’t so lucky. There were pictures on Italian TV of the car being
winched out of the lake.
The film is going to be released later this year, and I wonder if they’ll find
a replacement for the car. If it’s difficult to get hold of one for James Bond,
it must be very exclusive indeed. I hope the driver doesn’t have to pay for it
out of his wages!

Well that’s it from me for today. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day, and I
hope you can join me for Look North today at half past six on BBC One. Take
care.

Bye for now

Peter
