Good afternoon, it’s Peter here with your Letter as usual. I hope you’re well.
I think we’ve turned a corner haven’t we? Snow’s on the way apparently and
December is nearly with us. I don’t know about you, but I feel like we’re in
the build up to Christmas. What do you reckon? Maybe it’s too early yet, but
judging by the amount of people in our local high streets and shopping centres,
I reckon people are already knuckling down to their Christmas present shopping!
And talking of Christmas, I’ve heard this morning that the music show, ‘Top of
the Pops’ is to make a return. It started back in 1964 with Sir Jimmy Saville
at the helm and then it was controversially axed in 2006. Despite declining
audience figures whilst it was on our TV sets, there was quite a lot of uproar
when it was eventually cancelled after forty-two years on our screens. Last
month, I read that Simon Cowell wanted to buy the rights of the show for ITV,
but nothing came of that. And now this morning, I’ve re!
ad that the show is to make a return over the Christmas period with a special
programme on Christmas Day and one on New Year’s Eve. So there you go. The
all-important Christmas Number One will be announced on the show on Christmas
Day. What do you reckon to that? Have you been missing ‘Top of the Pops’ since
it’s been cancelled? Happy that it’s coming back, at least for a couple of
shows over Christmas? Let me know what you think.

The Final Frontier

I always like to hear about stories about space. I find it quite a strange
thing to think about that people are up there at the moment in the space
stations working away. Did you see those incredible pictures recently where
that poor astronaut dropped her tool kit and had to watch it float away into
space! That’s a bad day at work isn’t it? I hope they had a spare set. Well,
just a little note here to say that I’ve read that space stations are marking
ten years today since the first stage of the International Space Station was
put into orbit. Back in 1998, it was seen to be the first orbiting ‘scientific
city in the sky’. So a special anniversary today for the ISS. I wonder if the
crew up there at the moment are celebrating with a birthday cake!

Drinking

Have you been asked recently by a doctor about how much you drink on average
per week? It’s actually quite hard to work out isn’t it. I, for one, don’t
always know how many units are in say a glass of wine or a pint. Well, I’ve
read today that almost two in five people, who drink to excess, are lying to
their doctors about how much alcohol they really consume. That’s according to a
recent survey. Men and women drinking double the daily limit also admitted
concealing it from partners, friends and colleagues. And a government poll
found men were more likely to lie than women. This seemed quite surprising to
me, but experts apparently recommend the equivalent of two pints of beer for
men or one large glass of wine for women per day. I have heard that a glass of
wine a day could be classed as quite good for you. But two pints of beer a day
for men seems quite a lot. What do you reckon? According to this survey, the
majority of people who stick to this limit generally didn’t admi!
tted to how much they drank a week, but 39% of the ‘high risk’ drinkers gave a
lower figure. And even more worryingly, 19% of heavy drinkers were actually
lying to themselves about how much they drank. So there you go. Do you know how
much alcohol you drink per week? Are you in the ‘safe zone’ and would you admit
it? I’ve also heard an anecdote about a man being asked how much he drinks by
his doctor. Misunderstanding what the GP means and thinking he means water or
cups of tea, he tells the GP that he probably drinks about five or six mugs a
day!! I bet the doctor was worried!

Well, that's it from me for now. I hope you can join me for Look North tonight.

Take care,

Peter
