Hello there, Its Peter here. I hope you had an enjoyable weekend and didnt get caught in the fog if you were travelling over the weekend. Lisa will be joining us this evening and Im sure she will have all the details for the weather ahead this evening. I hope there is some good news!
Today marks the first day of the reduction of VAT. Chancellor Alistair Darling hopes the temporary cut in sales tax will kick-start the economy by getting Britain spending. Will it get you spending more on the run up to Christmas? Or have you already made plans to spend less and buy less? Id love to hear from you. You can contact me on [EMAIL PROTECTED] Nurse Chat Now, I mentioned last week that Nurses have been given new guidance on how they should refer to patients. The Nursing and Midwifery Council, suggest that calling older patients dearie or love be ruled out as it could be deemed offensive. Ive had lots of response to this story. Many thanks to Gina who got in touch with me on this and said I have no objection to the terms "dear" or "love" at least it means someone is speaking to you. It is the walking past and not acknowledging one's presence which is annoying and frustrating. If someone says "you alright love?" at least you have the opportunity to say, without feeling you are making a nuisance of yourself. I do object to being addressed by my christian name by a complete stranger i.e. a new doctor, when I don't even know their name or what they want to speak to me about. Thanks for that Gina. If you have any thoughts on this matter or anything else, get in touch. Id love to hear from you. Weekend Telly Did you catch Strictly Come Dancing this weekend? The competition really is heating up now. Next week will be the quarter finals and it really is anyones game now. Rachel Stevens and her partner Vincent Simone found themselves in the bottom two along with Christine Bleakley and her partner Matthew Cutler. Judge Craig said that both couples danced their hearts out but the judges chose to save Rachel and Vincent leaving Christine and Matthew to dance their final dance. Over on The X Factor the judges did not play a part in the decision making process and it was all in the viewers hands. Each of the contestants sang one Britney Spears song and another American pop song. It seemed that Ruth Lorenzo was not as popular as the rest of the contestants as she received the fewest votes and did not make it to next weeks semi finals. Did you manage to catch anything a little different over the weekend? If you have any suggestions, get in touch! The Italian Job Cult classic The Italian Job has always had one of the best cliff-hangers. The 1969 film ends with a gang of gold thieves hanging over a ravine in a bus. Every step they take towards the loot threatens to tip them into the abyss. Michael Caines character Charlie Croker then says Hang on lads, Ive got a great idea, and then the credits roll. Caine has said that he would have saved them by "switching on the engine", burning off petrol until it righted itself. "I crawl up, switch on the engine and stay there for four hours until all the petrol runs out," he said. Well there you go! If youve ever wondered what happened next, Michael Caine has his own idea about it. Thats all for todays Levy Letter. I do hope you will join me for Look North tonight.
