Hi Peter here. It is a very dark and drizzly day in Hull today. Will anyone
be staying up into the small hours to follow the Americans who have begun
voting for their next president after the longest, most expensive campaign in
US history? Republican John McCain is attempting to defy the opinion polls
while Democrat Barack Obama is seeking to become the country's first black
president.

Boxing Clever

It's hard to imagine too many similarities between the cerebral game of chess
and the bone-juddering discipline of boxing and yet there is a new sport that
melds the two. That's why the mere mention of chessboxing causes so many
raised eyebrows. It's a mixture of chess and boxing - one round of chess is
followed by a round of boxing and so on until the winner is declared by
knockout, checkmate or points victory. It is interesting to note that the two
best heavyweights of recent years are both keen chess players. Lennox Lewis
played chess during breaks in training and is a supporter of chess tuition for
children. When chessboxing is played, a large chessboard sits in the middle of
a boxing ring and the boxers start by sitting down and playing chess. A bout of
chessboxing stretches to 11 rounds - six of chess (four minutes each) and five
of boxing (three minutes each). A blokey cheer erupts whenever a piece is
taken, but the boxers wear headphones to block out the noise. !
Minutes later the mood darkens as the board is moved aside, gloves and gum
shields are put on and the boxing begins. I can’t think of a less likely
combination, water golf maybe? Have you ever seen any odd combinations for
sporting competitions? I would love to hear about them if you have.

A Matter of Loaf and Death a ‘Who-doughnut’ for Christmas

I read today that Cartoon favourites Wallace and Gromit will return to BBC One
at Christmas with their latest half-hour adventure. “A Matter of Loaf and
Death” sees inventor Wallace and his dog Gromit open a bakery. It reunites
Oscar-winning animator Nick Park with Bob Baker, co-writer of “The Wrong
Trousers” and “A Close Shave”. The film - originally entitled “Trouble At'
Mill” - marks Wallace and Gromit's first appearance since their 2005 film “The
Curse of the Were-Rabbit”. Peter Sallis will again provide the voice of
Wallace with “Coronation Street” star Sally Lindsay playing his new love
interest Piella Bakewell. What a lovely Christmas treat!

Please tune into Radio Humberside on Monday, 10 November and join me when I
will be swapping the Look North sofa for a microphone when 'The Peter Levy
Show' launches. Every weekday I will be on the air between 12 and 2pm with a
lively programme mixing topical chat and debate with fantastic music and maybe
even a little bit of fun! I look forward to hearing from you.

I hope you will join me.
Take care. Bye
Peter
