Hello there, it’s Peter here. I hope Tuesday’s edition of the letter finds you
well. The ice was on attack again this morning; I hope you didn’t find yourself
losing your footing this morning.

Bagpuss

I was saddened to hear today that the ‘Bagpuss’ creator Ovilver Postgate has
passed away. Postgate's partner, Naomi Linnell, confirmed he died at a nursing
home near his home in Broadstairs in Kent on Monday. His work, screened on the
BBC and ITV from the 1950s to the present day, was often in collaboration with
the artist and puppeteer Peter Firmin. Conservative leader David Cameron told
BBC Radio 5 Live that ‘Ivor the Engine’ was his favourite of Postgate and
Firmin's characters. "I never really got the ‘Clangers’," he added. "My wife's
a big ‘Clangers’ fan - I never quite got that in the same way." Sad news there
but I’m sure his memory will live on.

Smoking

I’ve been reading today that the government has announced that the open display
of tobacco in shops is to be banned in England and Wales. Ministers hope that
the display ban will reduce smoking. It is all in a bid to prevent young people
from smoking. A government consultation on how to deter young people from
smoking launched six months ago found the "overwhelming majority" of 100,000
responses backed the display ban. Ministers say where other countries - such as
Iceland - have removed displays; smoking prevalence among young people has
fallen by up to 10%. What do you think to this one? Do you think it will work?
Or will it hit smaller shops and their business? Get in touch with me on [EMAIL

Moving House

It will soon be time for Barack Obama to move into the White House, when he
takes over as President of the United States next year. So where will George
Bush and his family move to when the new First Family move in? Well I’ve read
today that George W Bush and his wife Laura are off to Dallas. They have bought
a home in one of the wealthiest areas of Dallas. Sally McDonough, Mrs Bush’s
press secretary, said the couple had bought a home in the Preston Hollow area.
She did not give details of the house but the US media say a friend of the
Bushes has purchased a ranch style four-bedroom property on a tree-lined
cul-de-sac. If they do move in, their neighbours will include Texas Rangers
owner Tom Hicks, billionaire T Bonne Pickens and Republican donor Harold
Simmons. Laura Bush was giving little away on Thursday when she told NBC News:
"We picked out a house, but we don't have occupancy of it. So as soon as we do,
we'll announce exactly where it is. We're looking forward to that.!
" I’m sure there will be a few curtains twitching when the moving vans arrive!

That’s all for today’s Levy Letter. I hope you will join me for Look North
tonight at 6.30pm on BBC One. Or tune in to my radio show on BBC Radio
Humberside between 12pm and 2pm. I’ll be speaking to former ‘Blue Peter’
presenter Peter Purves today. Listen live on 95.9FM, 1485AM or on DAB. If you
miss it you can always listen again online at bbc.co.uk/humberside

Take care,

Peter
