Hello there, it’s Peter here. I hope you enjoyed your weekend. Wasn’t it dark
and gloomy on Saturday? I remember thinking it felt rather rotten but it
appears to have brightened up today. I hope Paul has some good news for us
tonight.

‘The X Factor’

Well did you watch it? I think the whole nation must have tuned in for the
final. If you don’t already know, Alexandra Burke was crowned the eventual
winner with JLS coming in second place. 16 year old Eoghan Quigg came third.
As I mentioned in last week’s Letter, the final three sang Christmas songs and
performed a duet. Alexandra’s performance with Beyonce left her in tears and
as she was declared winner, a few more tears were shed, but she eventually
managed to say “I am the happiest girl alive.” Her cover of the Leonard Cohen
song “Hallelujah” was available to download after the programme and will be
available physically early this week.

Strictly News

If you weren’t flicking over between ‘The X Factor’ to ‘Strictly Come Dancing’
to find out who made it to the final, you may be surprised to find that all
three couples will make it to the final next week. Lisa Snowdon and Rachel
Stevens and their partners all received top points from the judges. This meant
that Tom Chambers could not be saved from a dance-off to decide who left the
series, all three have qualified and voting has been carried forward to next
weekend’s final.

Sports Personality

Olympic cycling champion Chris Hoy was named 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the
Year at the ceremony in Liverpool last night. Chris won three gold medals in
Beijing and beat Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington to the honour. Chris
became the first cyclist to win the award since Tommy Simpson in 1965. Chris
said “To win this award this year is so special as British sport has enjoyed
such a hugely successful year. It's been incredible.”

Top Films

Batman film ‘The Dark Knight’ has been named as one of the Top 10 movies of
2008 by the American Film Institute. Others include political biopic ‘Milk’,
the animated fantasy ‘Wall-E’ and Brad Pitt’s ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin
Button’. Clint Eastwood’s ‘Gran Torino’ and the comic book blockbuster ‘Iron
Man’ also feature alongside independent films ‘Frozen River’ and ‘Wendy and
Lucy’. ‘Frost/Nixon’ and ‘The Wrestler’ complete the list which is compiled by
a panel of film makers, reviewers and acedemics. The filmmakers behind the
AFI's Top 10 choices will be honoured at a luncheon on 9 January.

Pizza Defence

I’ve read that a pizza delivery man from Florida was challenged by armed
robbers but got in first with his very own weapon, a large pepperoni pizza.
Eric Lopez Devictoria, flung the piping hot pizza at the gunmen, then turned
and ran. The ‘Florida Sun-Sentinel’ reported that he made a safe getaway,
despite one shot being fired as he fled. Police later arrested three teenage
suspects, who have been charged with armed robbery.
That’s all from the rather entertainment filled Levy Letter today. Please join
me for Look North tonight at 6.30pm on BBC One.

Take care,

Peter
