Hello there and welcome to the first edition of the Levy Letter for 2009. I
hope it finds you well. Did you enjoy the festive period? I do hope you had an
enjoyable time and best wishes for the New Year.

‘Celebrity Big Brother’

Tonight sees the return of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’. It is the first time
Channel 4 have brought the Celebrity version back after 2007’s race row, which
saw Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, crowned the eventual winner. This year it
has been suggested that TV personality Ulrika Jonsson and ‘Austin Powers’ actor
Verne Troyer will be among the 11 stars expected to join the house later
tonight. Other big names tipped to take part in the show include Michael
Jackson’s sister La Toya, American rapper Coolio and former member of the
Sugababes, Mutya Buena. Who will make it into the house? We will just have to
wait and see and I will try to have more details for you next week.

Baby Names

I’ve been reading this week that the most popular names for babies this past
year were Olivia and Jack. The top boy’s name has remained the same for 14
years; Olivia has pushed Grace from the top of the girl’s list. The internet
parenting group Bounty found that celebrities were a key influence, with Ruby,
the name of Charlotte Church’s daughter coming in second. Amy Winehouse’s
troubled year saw her name fall three places to 23rd. Faye Mingo from Bounty
said: "Boys' names have witnessed the biggest changes over the last decade as
parents are increasingly influenced by American culture and celebrity trends
relating to films and sports personalities. Traditional royal names continue to
reign supreme in the boys' Top 100 in respect of the more traditional name
choices." Ms Mingo added: "Parents are more likely to name girls after a well
known movie star or celebrity. "Parents are also more likely to copy
celebrities' own choices of baby girls' names, perhaps as a way of refle!
cting the aspirations that they have for their children." Hollie, Tegan,
Patrick, Dominic and Gabriel disappeared from the top 100 this year. The top
ten names for boys were Jack, Oliver, Harry, Alfie, Charlie, Thomas, Joshua,
Daniel, James and William. The top girls’ names were Olivia, Ruby, Grace,
Emily, Jessica, Sophie, Chloe, Lily, Mia and Lucy. Some food for thought if you
know someone who is expecting this year!

New Year’s Resolutions

Now for those having difficulty deciding on resolutions this New Year, I may
have some good news. I’ve read that deciding to turn over a new leaf in the New
Year could do more harm than good, a mental health charity has warned. Mind has
urged people not to feel they must start 2009 armed with resolutions for
self-improvement. The charity has said that resolutions which focus on issues
such as the need to lose weight or job worries result in a negative self image.
If the results fail to materialise this could trigger feelings of failure and
inadequacy. Instead Mind chief executive Paul Farmer suggests “In 2009, instead
of making a New Year’s resolution, think positively about the year to come and
what you can achieve.”
The charity has suggested a few steps to improve all round mental health this
year. These include being active as exercise releases endorphins and learning
something new as this keeps minds stimulated and can give confidence. Well
there you go, a way for us all to improve in the New Year!

Doctor Who News

If you are a ‘Doctor Who’ fan you may find this interesting. After David
Tennant announced his departure from the role this year, speculation has been
rife about who will take residence in the Tardis. The identity of the Eleventh
Doctor will be revealed as part of a special edition of ‘Doctor Who
Confidential’ which you can catch tomorrow at 5.35pm on BBC One.

That’s all for the Levy Letter today. Please join me for Look North tonight at
6.30pm on BBC One.

Take care,

Peter
