The way i see it, MUK students & people in Uganda in general don't
use Linux because its usage scenarios are very few -- as one of the
many possible reasons.
Linux is an excellent server os, and this is said in all linux
classes. A linux class is not complete without the "Linux Server
Usage" scenario (HTTP, FTP, SSH, DNS, DHCP, Mail, etc).
I wonder how many linux students get to deploy a linux server outside
the class room.
I also wonder how many tech guys in Uganda can say they *personally*
have a server on the internet -- an excellent linux usage scenario.
If it were cheap to put a computer onto the public internet, that
would be big potential for linux deployments.
We need to create many more linux usage scenarios if we want people
to use it. Probably it's the way linux is taught. All linux classes
focus on the server aspect of linux which, unfortunately isn't within
the usage scope of most people *even* those that go to MUK Faculty of
Computing.

Hi P.
Maybe we should discuss why MUK students are not using linux. After
all this
is the LUG (not the AUG ;-)
When we went to the presentation of the third year students last
year we saw a
lot of php/mysql applications. These just run and install much
nicer on
linux. That, in a normal world, would be a benifit for the students.
As MUK is preparing students for the real world, and in the real
world, php &
mysql applications run on linux & apache mostly, training students
in that
setup is also not a bad idea.
Well, i am preaching for my own church (and the AUG guys) again.
Is there anything we can do to make that clear to MUK tutors &
students?
