Indeed it would be sad.
PC market share made Intel great. It lowered prices, and powered the
Mhz war. It is doubtful that their chips were ever better,
architecture-wise or in terms of raw speed. Even today. take a look at
the Power 6 chip that IBM is touting recently. Or for that matter
Sun's UltraSPARC 'Niagara' range. Can't Touch This, as MC Hammer would
say!
The other day I had to explain to a bewildered second year (MUK)
class why Java and its machine-independence was such a big deal way
back then. They have grown up in a world where Computer = Intel =
Windows, and can't understand all the fuss. (Sadly, Linux is not much
in the running there, for reasons too long to recount.)

Yeah, intel chips are better than Power PC chips, but i have very
little experience with Power PC chips. I always felt that if one
company dominated the PC chip market then that would stop
innovation. AMD makes great chips and that is all i buy but they are
still derivatives of the i386 architecture which i believe is an
intel standard. Intel seems to be locking up the micro chip market.
A lot of phone are going to start using their Atom processor now.

Not a strong-enough case to ignore more superior
microprocessors (or so I think). You see even Cisco are
departing from Motorola Freescale and IBM's PPC in favour
of Intel-driven control planes.
Copy-catting is a fact of life - Apple should figure out how
to deal with it.
