Hate to disagree, but I bet there's more left in OS X to be optimized. They
only just started prebinding applications with the release of Jaguar. Also,
I think that Window buffering compression was finally included in Jaguar.
There are LOTS of other parameters that Apple can choose to speed up, given
accounting for any particular caveats. For example, go to Versiontracker.com
and run a search for the word, "optimize". Apple may be dragging it's feet
speeding up OS X, but the shareware community isn't! I use a cool app,
called "MOX Optimize" to speed up several OS X parameters. Check it out!

Heh-heh, here's another one for ya. I don't know if you Dock hard drives or
folders (I have my three hard drives in the Dock and off the Desktop by
preference). But if you don't, drag your hard drive to the Dock, just for
this test. Now, with the drive in the Dock, you can access it's contents
just like you can with an alias in the Apple Menu in OS 9. Now, press and
hold your mouse on the Docked drive icon. Depending on the speed of your
machine and the volume off items in your drive, doing this the first time
will cause a pause as OS X reads the contents of your drive. But in a couple
of seconds, a pop-up menu of your drive's contents will appear. Now that OS
X has had a chance to cache the contents off your hard drive, it will
display the contents much faster on subsequent occasions. So, try it again,
now that the drive has been cached. Faster, isn't it? But... Not
instantaneous! WHY NOT?!!! More OS X code yet to be optimized? Not quite.
Now, try popping up the hard drive AGAIN (a third time, now), BUT THIS TIME
HOLD DOWN THE CONTROL KEY BEFORE CLICKING ON THE DRIVE.

POW!!! Instant popup!

What the hell is that?! Now THAT's what I want without having to press the
control key! I have found no option in either Apple's prefs, nor in any
third party offering to enable this speed fulltime. I sure wish there was.
There really should be an option I the Dock preference panel to turn off
the pause, just like there's a slider to adjust the pause for spring-loaded
folders.

So, even with Apple's CONSCIOUS decisions in play, here, there is still room
for improvement.

And as for Apple dropping G3 support, that probably will not happen for at
least five years, in my view. I say this because Apple is still selling G3
processors in their iBooks and the G3 iMac is STILL being sold at
CAN$1,299.00. Plus, the processor upgrade manufacturers have been amazingly
resourceful in providing OS X compatibility. Kudos to them.
