Not sure what you mean about "remote only"? (I haven't used Remote Access on
my main computers in 4 years... cable modem & LAN rules :). That TCP/IP
Options control panel probably does the exact same thing (IIRC it is also
d/lable from Apple). You need to do this to cause the computer to release
the modem (i.e. the cable modem "forgets" the computer's MAC address) if you
need to switch between computers (otherwise the modem will still be trying
to communicate with the "old" computer's MAC address, even while it's hooked
up to the new one).

You do it (with this particular modem... can't remember name anymore...
Terryon?) whenever you want to switch you cable connection between
computers. But, no, you only have to do it with the "old" computer.

PS I *suspect* the AppleTalk trick is distinct from the DHCP lease (not sure
since I've only done it once, and it wasn't even my own machine).
