I doubt it'll get much faster. For the most part it's already fast enough on
above 500 MHz G3s and 400 MHz G4s, and they're not going to spend resources
supporting older Macs except insofar as their support agreements and
California laws require them to.

They'll drop OS X support for the B&Ws, the Beige G3s and all the G3 iMacs
in the not too distant future I imagine (since the only $ they make off
those machines is the sale of the OS there's not much incentive to provide
support for us older users... especially when a top-of-the-line, nicely
decked out G3 tower can be had for less than $1000 CAN).

But, that said, OS X is pretty much usable for day-to-day operations. They
introduced some strange problems with OS X 10.2.2 but that'll get fixed with
10.2.3 I'm sure. They won't be able to sucker people into paying for another
upgrade for at least a year, and in that time they'll have to make sure that
things get stabilised (lest they get a bad stability rep for their UNIX-like
OS).

And, in the past Apple has provided remarkable support levels. If my memory
doesn't fail me, Apple was supporting the Mac Plus for around 10 years! The
last OS to run on the Plus was something like 7.5.5 and that was released
late 96/early 97 while the Plus had first come on the scene in 1986. Of
course, people who bought themselves the PowerBook 540 only had three or
four years of support (93/94 release date, 97/98 last supported OS date).
