If, by saying "switch feature", you're talking about switching active
applications in RAM to bring a different one up to the front, this pause on
Docked folders and drives has nothing at all to do with your point. App
switching via the Dock is and should be instantaneous. Now, if you want to
open the Docked drive _AT_IT's_ROOT_ by just clicking the icon and NOT
holding, I'm sure that the system can detect a click versus a click+hold. It
obviously does even right now, as clicking a drive opens it's contents
immediately, yet the system intentionally pauses when the user click+holds.
Now, the other function is dragging items OFF the Dock. Yes, if there were
no pause, then the docked item would pop up when the user really wanted to
undock the item. Well, how often does one undock an item, versus how often
do they dive into Docked drives and folders? I'd bet that people do way more
of the latter than they do the former. So, my revision of history would have
been no pause on popping up docked folders and drives (or at least a user
prefs option), and like the Command+drag to move items around the Dock
without stuff skidding out of your way, use another key combi to drag items
OFF the Dock... Like option+drag, which seems presently vacant. I tried
option+drag on mine and it took it off the Dock. So, the key command is
there, ready to go.

Anyway, I would at least prefer a delay option, like spring loaded folders
has.
