But if you look at the actual source of that email it was correctly
escaped:

From: =?utf-8?q?Ralf_Schenk=F0=9F=94=B4_via_mailop?= <mailop@mailop.org>
Reply-To: =?UTF-8?B?UmFsZiBTY2hlbmvwn5S0?= <r...@databay.de>

So it still contains only ASCII, until displayed.
