All, I was able to work around the error by using the menubar drop-down to switch to a different account (which logged in properly) and then again to switch back. My primary account loads after switching back, at which point I can hit Cancel on the login prompt and then Cancel again when asked if you really want to quit Mailplane.
I've tried this 3 times with identical results—success every time. You can also hit cancel twice *before* switching accounts. That works, too. The timing on canceling the login prompt may be irrelevant. If you don't have a secondary Gmail account, maybe try creating one and switching that way. I haven't tested that path, so no promises.
