It costs a company a lot of money to support old products. It makes sense to do it for a reasonable transition period. But remember that not only will other technology make a particular build obsolete, but developers spend time on fixes that no longer make the company money, and support has to make sure that everyone is trained up on obsolete technology. This is enormously expensive, and is just not realistic. I had the same issues with 2.5, and the upgrade to 3.0 worked like a charm.
