In the context of the current discussion on teaching the Aeneid in
translation, it may be worth noting that Tom Holland's 'Rubicon: The Triumph
and Tragedy of the Roman Republic' published last summer seems to be gaining
very wide currency and has had some excellent reviews as an exciting history
for the general, non-Classical reader today.

It also seems to have been selling quite well and is 316 in the UK Amazon
sales list, high I think for a book on Roman history.

I haven't read it but am conscious of it because it is being serialised in
abridged form on BBC Radio 4 and I seem to hear each installment twice a

One hopes that books like this, by providing a highly readable account of
part of Roman history that was very familiar to Virgil, might be
particularly useful alongside the real material, or its translations.
