I encourage people to look at Tariq Ali's criticisms of Ahmed Rashid (Tariq Ali is the person who told the Indians that they should look at their own Muslims rather than Pakistani state groups for the culprits of the Mumbai massacre; he also makes it seem as if Rashid ignores the corruption of the Karzai government and could care less about development programs and Pashtun claims and celebrates US backed torture and violations of the Geneva Conventions) . Perhaps you find Tariq Ali persuasive. I don't. For example, I don't see what's alarmist about saying that the power vacuum in Afghanistan would lead to proxy warfare by Iran, China, India and Pakistan and that a Taliban/ISI victory in its own "backyard" would be devastating for the Afghanis, and it would likely have horrible effects on the politics of Pakistan and the political development of India's Muslims. And since Tariq Ali is for development programs and national reconciliation and regional negotiations, why is he against any use of force against those dead set opposed to any of that? And who is shedding tears about the use of force against al Qaeda? Marxists? Really?
