Louis and I had frequent political disagreements but to his credit he never threatened to purge me nor others like Fred Feldman and Walter Lippmann with whom he also frequently jousted. Those who quit the list mostly did so voluntarily. Louis reminded me of nothing so much as an academic manqué who mainly directed his venom outward at various left-wing professors and public intellectuals whose credentialed celebrity status he evidently resented. I very much valued his scholarship and his film and cultural criticism. Until his passing, I hadn’t realized that a cult of personality of sorts had developed around him on the list.
