Wow, these hoary old stories about Boris Johnstone sabotaging the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia again! Even though Lavrov rejected the Ukrainian draft two days before Boris's visit (and even what Boris is alleged to have said really is just alleged). As if Ukraine did not get Russia's answer with the Bucha massacre, and as if it cannot make up its own mind; yet despite that, give me a link to where Zelensky rejected his own plan and canceled the negotiations? Yes, Ukraine's plan, see here: https://meduza.io/en/slides/ukraine-s-10-point-plan. Here's a good summary by Howie Hawkins from a list I'm on, with all the links:
“The peace settlement on the table at the end of March provided for Russia to return to the pre-February 24 lands it held in the Donbass and Crimea, for Ukraine to be a neutral non-NATO country without nuclear weapons or foreign troops (the latter two provisions are already in the Ukrainian constitution) in return for a security guarantee treaty signed by the big powers, and for the status of the Donbas and Crimea to be determined over a number of years diplomatically, not militarily. “According to a Reuters report, that basic proposal was on the table in the days before and just after the invasion, but Putin rejected it <https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/exclusive-war-began-putin-rejected-ukraine-peace-deal-recommended-by-his-aide-2022-09-14/>because he wanted to annex Ukraine, not just make it militarily neutral. “On April 7, two days before Johnson’s visit to Zelensky on April 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the proposed settlement was “unacceptable <https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-says-ukraine-presented-unacceptable-draft-peace-deal-2022-04-07/> .” “Whether Johnson’s April 9 no negotiations message, attributed to unnamed sources in the Zelensky administration only by a single Ukrainian news source, represented the Collective West, as the report said he claimed, has never been confirmed <https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2022/05/5/7344206/> by the US or other Western countries. “In any case, three days later on April 12, Putin said the negotiations were at a “dead end <https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-flies-into-russian-far-east-ukraine-talks-with-belarusian-leader-2022-04-12/>.” “On April 27, the *Financial Times* reported in a story entitled, “Vladimir Putin abandons hopes of Ukraine deal and shifts to land-grab strategy,” that Putin had “lost interest in diplomatic efforts <https://www.ft.com/content/a16c4ecd-e835-4e71-a12d-c7bec9f34d7c> to end his war,” citing sources briefed on conversations with Putin. “Meanwhile, Zelensky remained open to peace talks. At an April 25 press conference, Zelensky had said he is ready to hold peace talks <https://www.newsweek.com/ukraines-zelensky-reveals-hard-line-ending-russia-putin-peace-talks-1700598> and wishes to do so face-to-face with Putin. “He followed up on May 12 <https://www.newsweek.com/ukraines-zelensky-reveals-hard-line-ending-russia-putin-peace-talks-1700598>, again calling for negotiations. “And again <https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/ukraine-war-zelensky-wants-direct-talks-with-putin-amid-fierce-battle-in-east-top-points-101654659723392.html> on June 8: Asked about talks with Russia which have been suspended since late March, Zelensky said that Ukraine has not changed his position. He said he maintains the view that war should be ended at the negotiating table. The Ukrainian President also stated that he was ready for direct talks with Vladimir Putin, adding that there was “nobody else to talk to” but the Russian president, news agency AFP reported. “I think these statements by Putin and Lavrov show it was Russia that didn’t want a peace agreement that would make them retreat to the pre-Feb 24 contact line in late March. Russia was at its peak of territory held, although it was being defeated and about to retreat from Kiev and other northern oblasts.” On Wed, Apr 17, 2024 at 10:43 PM D Derwin via groups.io <siptuactivist= [email protected]> wrote: > I wonder is everyone so content to see Marxmail diverge so much from the > intentions of Louis Proyect by allowing a platform for campists and > necessitating a pointless debate with those who have so many platforms > elsewhere? > > Anyway here is a recent response to an old talking-point once again given > an outlet on Marxmail: > *No, the West did not sabotage an early peace deal in Ukraine* > https://www.thebureau.news/p/no-the-west-did-not-sabotage-an-early > > > -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
