I can agree with all of the above, to some degree:
@Nils (and Karen): good point that we don't make connections in our
documentation between the system terminology and the terminology used in the
UI. We should. But remember that our documentation is intended for developers
and configurers; we don't have end-user documentation. I'd argue that the
(developer & installation) documentation should have explanations ( e.g. "In
the Matterhorn 1.3 Admin UI, workflow instances can be found in the Recordings
tab") not that the UI should use the same terminology. (And maybe we do need
end-user documentation.)
@Hank: yes, the Episode service introduced the possibility of having
identically named items in the Recordings tables, which is confusing. (I
brought this up as a concern on list months ago.) Changes (more than just
changing the name of the tab) really need to be made to the (currently named)
Recordings tab to be able to clearly identify what's going on. I am remiss in
not having written up tickets for these issues yet, but I haven't had the
opportunity to play with this enough yet.
I'm operating on the basic usability principle that says "The system should
speak the user's language, with words, phrases and concepts familiar to the
user, rather than system oriented terms." And, I'm still assuming that our user
is a program administrator, somebody who isn't required to have deep knowledge
of Matterhorn's inner workings. But perhaps we have given up on this goal? If
so, very different design decisions can (and should) be made.
