Judy Stern commented on MH-8695:
--------------------------------
re. Design of Everyday Things (I'm copying and pasting stuff I've written on
list in years past):
Norman's refrigerator example shows what happens when design conveys the
*wrong* mental model, thus causing the user to make erroneous assumptions and
to be unable to effectively control the device (in this case the temperature of
the refrigerator). I am in complete agreement that we don't want to make this
error. However, it is equally wrong for us to ignore the mental models and
expectations that users bring to the table (and Norman and other experts argue
this as well); referring to the design of a system, Norman has said "Ideally
you should make something that is consistent with what they [the users]
understand unless there is some strong reason not to do so." Norman also does
not argue that the user needs to be exposed to the full complexity of the
underlying implementation, only that which allows him to be effective. Thus we
need to constantly think about how much of the underlying implementation should
be conveyed (some of it might be somewhat arbitrary) and balance th
at with the mental model of the user.
I believe a webcast program administrator can effectively use the UI without
understanding what a Matterhorn Workflow is (and that the abstraction of the
Recording works reasonably well). If, however, the Matterhorn team
overwhelmingly agrees that the only way to effectively use it is if they do
understand the underlying implementation (and thus we are talking about someone
decidedly more technical than a program administrator typically needs to be),
we ought to make this clear up front to potential adopters.
