Brad,
You are right. The crank throw is so big the block is relieved to allow the
big ends to go round. The rods get close to 45 degrees from vertical at
quarter turn, hence big stresses on the cylinder walls. I dont know why,
but it isn't "undrivable" on the street although grunt down low. Power
starts at 3500. These engines have lots of bore clearance and dry sumps to
reduce friction, and lumpy cams so they sound "rattly" at low revs. They
sound awesome after 3500, and are unburstable up to 7000. Not a wide power
band really, so a five speed with a 1:1 top gear is pretty useful, with a
4.6 diff ratio to keep it on the boil in the bush.
