The L16, basically, sucks. For the same outlay you will get the same gains
from either the L18 or L20b engine but you will always have more hp
initially. The list seems to be 50/50 over the high revving L18 and the
grunty L20b (I'm the latter). I reckon go to your local wrecker and grab a
stock L20b and 5 speed, won't cost you much (hopefully) and will be much
better!!
