I know this is probably late for this topic, here it is anyway.
If your running a stock carby I can highly recommend modifying the
secondary barrel vacuum advance to open faster. From
memory inside the vacuum chamber there is a small spring and a ball
bearing and a larger spring that acts against the diaphgram. By removing
the ball bearing and small spring and changing the larger spring to a
softer one you can alter when the secondary throttle barrel opens. I
remove the small ball bearing and small spring and use a softer large
spring, this has improved standing start and slow speed acceleration
dramatically. Try just removing the ball bearing and small spring or
changing the large spring to a softer one first, put it together, do the
suck test with your mouth for leaks and test drive. I have noticed that
the spring I used is probably a little too soft and throttle response at
speed is not quite as good as it could be and I also suspect my air/fuel
ratios are a little lean which can't easily be helped.
Also make sure its properly tuned, check the
plugs/points/timing/cap/rotor/leads before you do the carb mods. Don't
trust point gap for best power use a dwell meter for around 52 deg.
Also check the accelerator linkages. Mine was worn quite a lot where the
arm from the firewall connects to the carby so I up made some bushes for
a tight fit. Check that the carby is opening fully when the accelerator
pedal is pressed. Make sure the acceleration pump works, the pedal
should get harder to push near the floor. Last but not least check that
the choke works and opens fully when off.
