wouldn't like a GSR lancer. I know i would. Actually i would prefur one of
each but it would be nice having

newish clean 4wd turbo car..and a 1600 for fun on the
weekends
To me, that seems like a very sensible thing to
do?

If I where you, I wouldn't
bother spending much on the L16 at all. Though if you can get your hands on
a cheap 5 speed you'll get a slightly quicker car due to better spread of
gear ratios.
I'd spend most of the initial cash on suspension, brakes,
wheels and tyres, (in that order). Make your car handle and stop, and you'll
have just as much fun wasting cars with 3 times the power through the twisty
bits. Doing this also prepares your car for an engine upgrade in the future.
