>From my limited experience with a draw through L series setup I have the
following comments:

With 9:1 comp and 9psi boost no water injection and a std radiator I found
that you could do 0 to 120 mph very quickly.
This did present a few problems though. When the air temps and underbonnet
temps were cool things were OK however on a warm day detonation and a blown
head gasket were the result. The crappy STD radiator couldn't cope keeping
the engine temp down either.

The crank and rod on an L series engine look as good if not better than an
SR20DET equivalent parts when you put them side by side. The bearing surface
for the mains and rods was much bigger for the L than the SR. ie if a Std SR
bottom end can do 400hp the the L series should too. Of course I am assuming
the crank is made from the same material. SR flywheel has 8 bolts to hold on
to the crank, the L20 only 6.

The current twin cams have it over the L series head WRT airflow and I think
this would be the limiting step for creating maximum turbo power in an L
engine. James and Tim I think there is no doubt that a draw though carby
system can make huge amounts of power on an Lseries engine, however without
sophisticated engine management you are going to be on the edge of engine
destruction esspecially with extreme boast levels etc (I found this out the
hard way!). That said why not try a blow though carby setup with
intercooler, should be more reliable. As for cost vs power benefit (L vs
twin cam) I will leave that up to you. As an after thought what about a gas
turbo L. Gas has a higher octain that petrol!

James are you coming down to Sandown?

Ah, this one could cause a bit of debate....
the old twin cam vs single cam
Old tech vs new tech

Everyone knocks the old Carby turbo, and the old Single cam
motors.... But what about Monro's 10 second Escort (2L single
cam and carby) or Craig Dysons RX7, Carby turbo doing 8's
(I know it's a rotary, but it's a carby turbo), even my old L24
carby turbo when it was in a Rail was pushing 9's
So who says you need an intercooler and EFI to run big boost.

One day I want to push a L20 and carby turbo to it's limits
and just see what sort of times/hp we can get....
Might have to put it into a Datto 1000 delux body though :)

But in the meantime, Re the 2.2L bottom end....I'll let you know
cause that is pretty much the block combo I am going to put
under my Z18ET in the 2 door.

PS. Guess what...... For all of you who though it would never
happen.....
I actually made a start on the 2 Door over the weekend!!
Started paint stripping the engine bay and pulled the rest of the
dash out... Will be getting the motor in about 4 weeks, so have
to pull my finger out.
