Dont laugh too loudly but Chris Wall and I competed in a 4 day Readyplan
Rally in about 1980 and Brocky - Yes THE Peter Perfect - drove a Gemini -
fitted with a twin weber fed Holden Starfire 4! Pushrods and all. Not too
slow either.

I think Brocky ran third in the event which started in Melbourne then around
Mildura, Broken Hill to Echuca. It was run by Rally legend, Ross "Maps"
Runnells. Ross was Geoff Portman's navigator in the legendary "Grunter"
(IFK 250) and other Nissan weapons that came later, for those too young to
know.

Our car finished 5th outright after 4 long days and nights in a pretty
"stock" 1600 rally car, and shared the teams prize for getting three cars
home, 2 Dattos and a Celica.

The other Datto, Mick Ellis's '72 Marathon car, only just made the finish
after Mick hit a tree head on at about 150K's. The navigator had called a
"flick right and left" turn through a fence line they were travelling along.
Mick was surprised when they arrived on the other side of the fence to be
facing a wall of big trees - at 200k's - instead of the track, which
actually kept turning right. The service crew stretched out the inner guard
with a gas axe, at 2 am in the bush, in 3 hours. They replaced the smashed
RHF leg/wheel/disc and got Mick back in the event.

Mick had already replaced both left doors the second day, after wiping them
off on a tree in the Sunset Desert the night before. He also rolled it
during the next day when arriving at a 90 degree corner a tad quickly, he
drifted past the turn left and fell over a log.

Halcyon days!
