Subject: Re: r31 rear pads/Bias

You might be surprised!!  Now that i have the bias sorted out the stopping power continues to surprise me. It is awesome!! But I guess brakes can only stop as good as your tyres will let them.. I reckon that for the first couple of stops there wouldn't be a lot in it, but after that the 4 spots start to earn their keep. My setup now is
Front    4 spot calipers(import pathfinder) on bloody large vented (Mazda) discs

These are the brakes off the blue car?  Very sweet setup that, you could have lost those the first time I saw them (:-, I think with a better pads ($$$) your system would work even better as street pads just aren't designed to work as well as race quality pads. IMHO Metal kings and Ultimates are good, Paged and Porterfield are better but Endless are for serious money no problem racers. The disadvantages of race quality pads on street cars are noise and smell  - they squeal but you get used to it but the ppl in the next lane get nervous about it for some reason. You have to use a higher quality fluid, normal 500C stuff is crap and evaporates in a couple of laps and the thing that got me for a while is the standard flexy lines are good enough for street use but really turn to mush when things get warm under there. I changed my fronts recently for a set of Nismo items that I had in the box of bits under the house that I kept from the Sports Sedan and they made an amazing difference.

Rear     VH calipers(fronts)  on (nearly as large) vented VH discs.
I am using Bendix Metal Kings front and rear
Brake fade due to heat is NOT an issue. I reckon it would stop the same all day.
The only disadvantages of this system is lack of a cable handbrake and the greater unsprung weight. I can feel the weight there sometimes when going over corrugations.
If you keep the overall weight in check you shouldn't have a problem with the unsprung weight, it will transmit through the steering but that's normal - your lower overall weight might be where I have a bit of trouble matching your 4 spots now it's balanced

The major advantage is when i am towing the boat as once again fade is NOT an issue.
LOL,  do you tow the boat behind the yellow car?

Having used this setup for a while i quite frankly wouldn't recommend for anything other than an out and out racer as I believe it is overkill and the added unsprung weight creates too many other handling problems and loads on shock absorbers and stuff.
But I like the idea of the contest  hehe
So when are u coming up?
Prolly early next year Feb, Mar. It would be good to pick a weekend when something is on; Lakeside (I love that track)

cheers
Mick
PS  What are these Paged pads?
They were the only decent pads I could get in Canberra (exy, but decent stuff is) for the Girlocks as I couldn't get Ultimates to suite and I didn't really want to use metal kings as I don't like the dead pan feel of them when cold. Paged are nearly as good in -10c on the first stop at the end of the street as they are when the rotors are glowing and the 200B rotors will glow - very pretty at night. The only thing that has surprised me a few times with Paged is when they get wet they don't work at all for a second or so and then they come on like normal - bad feeling was had the first time it happened to me as I thought I was going to redesign the rear end of the car in front of me as you get used to good brakes and take them for granted. Also they seem to get wet just from the spray from the tyres so you don't have to go through deep water - I haven't sussed this one yet but I'm very aware of it these days - security tap of the pedal with the left foot.

PPS  Stop picking on poor old Nigel!!
LOL
