Yes I agree with what you say, Koni adjustable shocks are a good example of
non gas shocks that work in this way. I used a pair of Gabriel wet shocks
for nearly 20 years on the dirt car and seeing as how they were given to me
I pulled them apart just to find out how a shock worked and with these babes
I just changed the oil a few times to seek the desired stiffness. I still
have them, god knows what for as they are small axle, long barrel 510 items
and have had 15wt fork oil in them for years. Beautiful shocks on dirt but
the strut geometry is not really good for much to me these days as I stick
to the black stuff now. I've kept them just in case Julien buys a basher and
needs something that is up to the punishment.

The fork oil weight used for any application depends on the orifice sizing
in the bump and rebound valves of the shock. Most Datsun/Nissan struts have
remarkably similar orifice sizes for the four cylinder sedans and sixes. The
only variation is the oil weights used . The GTS 6 cylinder struts with
electronic damping adjustment (DR30, HR31 & R32 & R33 GTS) use a 5 weight
oil and change the orifice sizes using an electric motor to rotate a central
strut shaft that changes the rebound valving in the strut base. Bump rates
can only be changed by oil weight changes or soldering the original and
redrilling the orifice.
These struts can be manually adjusted and make a good external set of
adjustable struts for varying conditions from street to race conditions. The
only problem is that the struts are gas filled and this can add a $200
charge for re-gassing if adjustments are made to the oil weights.
