G'day Jake, I have been too busy racing the other 1600 this year to really get stuck into it.
Summer project is to work out how to fit everything in the engine bay. I wasn't happy with my first attempt at the engine mounts. I pretty much know how to make them now though. I need to get the engine futher back and crank centerline, centered in the engine bay. I have a GTiR intercooler which should fit nicely as a front mount, infront of the radiator hole. I will need to change the tanks on it. Hot air from the turbo will enter through a hole in the rad support pannel, low down on the passenger side. The outlet of the i/c will exit at the top and go straight into the throttle body through a 90 deg bend. I am concerned about getting a radiatior that will fit as the I/c piping will dictate the max width and the front pulley's the max thickness. The other problem is where to put a thermofan. I still have a big parts list to finance including an R200 LSD, brakes, wheels and paint job plus all the small extras which chew up lots of money. The plan is to have it ready for the NDSOC driver training day next november at Sandown. I don't claim to know everything about these motors but I have had an FJ20DET in my 1600 for the last 4-5 years and my brother has had an SR20det powered 1600 for the past two years. I am also about to put a CA18det in to a Sunny. The weight difference between the two motors is SFA. Both my brothers and my car weigh 1040kg on the same weigh bridge. The SR DET is a heavy block because of the external bracing required to handle the turbo cylinder pressures. The SR also runs a huge alloy girdle and a tiny tin sump hanging off that rather than the traditional tin sump of the FJ. Strength is incomparable. A standard FJ with 80k kms on it will happily rev to 8500rpm. An sr will break the rockers at those sorts of rpm. The SR is a much nicer engine with much better NVH properties and is extremely smooth. If I where building an everyday streeter I would chose the SR over the FJ. However if you want a motor with big hairy balls that you can strap a big T04 on the side of, chuck in a set of forgies and abuse day in day out nothing matches an FJ. They might not be smooth, but they are damn strong. The FJ was originally the FJ24. It was NA and produced between 240 - 280hp depending on spec according to the S110 240RS factory parts manual I have. If anyone would like a copy of the manual I can supply it. Sorry to get on my soapbox but the misinformation spread about all import engines is something I find quite irritating.
