Leighton,
That was probably a bit excessive saying they are a disaster waiting to
happen but they do chop out. This happens reasonably quickly in race
conditions. As Cam mentioned, the bushes in the arm have to be distorted to
pull on large amounts of caster. This means that with any bumps the pivot
shaft is trying to split the bush. With a rose joint, the ball automatically
aligns with the shaft and has minimal friction allowing the suspension to
work more freely.
For smaller amounts of caster (below 2.5 - 3 degrees) the bushes will absorb
this amount of deflection without the load on the bushing being excessive.
This is why manufacturers use rubber/urethane bushes in situations for up to
3 degrees caster. The load increases exponentially with the amount of bush
deflection.
It all means that my personal preference is for a rose jointed arm over a
bushed one. If in the interests of legality you have to have an arm deemed
suitable for road use it looks like you have to have a bushed arm.

Cheers
Feral Errol

by saying bushes are a disaster waiting to happen do you mean that doing the
shims or threaded type you have to ue rose joints???

Thanx
