Excellent suggestion this from Errol, knowing your corner weights is very critical and very often overlooked by enthusiast tuners these days - variable rate springs work very well on Aussie crap roads but I've found to get the best out of them you need adjustable damper/rebound rates as well. I've fitted this sort of gear into our family Toy (not rear coil over) and it wasn't easy to get an over 1500kg tank to handle well.   Dan, OK, if you're going to use coil overs on the rear of a 1600 then the fulcrum ratio is not 3.8 rather it is around 0.9ish, I think it varies just a tad in the range of .9 - .95,  depending on which method you use the attach the suspension unit and what the deflection angle is. What this means is that the equivalent stock spring rate of say 600lbs for a coil over is ~150lbs which as you have said is much the same as a BRE car. I would use some progressive double taper springs of 90 – 170 lb/in variable rate for the rears and 125 – 240 lb/in variable rate for the fronts. This would give you a soft ride for normal driving and a hard rate as you load up the suspension during exuberant driving. The 5 degree rear angle means you could up the rear rate by 10 lbs. I'm talking in terms of the true spring rate ,and I'm swaying towards lighter to try and preserve some comfort for driving on the average roads around here. The rear suspension will be a coilover type shock ,mounted at around a 5 deg. angle so maybe a higher rate might be more on the ball.
