Yes a bit far.

I really go back to my original point - if the only thing that was 
changed was the head gasket then the problem must be cam timing. 
I'd suggest going back to the basics - set #1 psiton on TDC on the 
compression stroke and then check the position of the #1 cyl In/EX 
cam lobes - this is where experience comes in as they don't point 
straight up but you should be able to check the valve clearances if 
everything is (nominally) 'OK', ie should be some gap between the 
rocker and the cam lobe (off the top of the head, for a stock cam, 8 
thou on the inlet and 10 thou on the exhaust).
