Yes, that's what I would do...but I'm just giving options here. Some people are
not comfortable or don't have the time to do such things; different stages of
life.

But if you are doing a used engine, you can easily fall into the "while it's
out" repair/maintenance/upgrade mess too.

FWIW, I'd just do the cheap fix and see how long it goes.. worst it can do is
break again, *then* you deal with the swap/repair/whatever. Buy yourself some
time for $7 worth of Loc-tite and DIY in the driveway with a Miata buddy from
the list. If you are near me, I'd gladly lend a wrench and a hand.. Beer and
pizza can get you some cheap and highly skilled labor around here if they are
local. :)

It would seem to.

A loctite fix would be $300-$500 for an indy shop to do. Could be over $1,000
if you start replacing everything mentioned by someone else in the "while
you're in there" vein.

What's the labor to pull/replace an engine? 6 to 8 hours?
More so labor wise to then do a crank replacement.

However, if the loctite fix is always going to bother you, that you "know it's
there", which I can understand the sentiment, then I think just getting a
decent used engine replaced would be the best bet. I've heard of them going for
$300.

IMHO

The locate fix wins on cost.

Without much time or space, I am actually considering an entire Japanese
replacement engine for my miata that has 2/4 bolts currently sheared off of my
long nose crank pulley (late model 1991).

The loctite may not work and while the tube costs close to nothing, the labor
is far from that. Assuming the cost of a crank, and labor to replace a crank, I
cannot imagine it being able to compete price wise with either the loctite
solution or the engine swap.

If one was doing their own work, it makes logical sense to do the loctite. If a
mechanic was being paid, I think one enters a gray area.

What would the price be for a mechanic to perform the loctite fix?
What would the price be for a mechanic to tear down an engine to swap a crank?
What would the price be for an entire engine swap (used JDM= ~$600) + labor?

Out of these choices, I am curious what would be the most cost efficient and
also wonder which would be the most durable fix for someone that drives their
vehicle aggressively.

No kidding cheaper than a crank replacement. My supply house must've only had

How much is needed??? First web search give Amazon as a hit with a 6ML tube for
under 9 bucks

Lots of other hits available from 9 bucks to 156 bucks.

Last I knew the Loctite 660 was about $30 per tube and only available at
industrial supply houses, which is where I found it. Has that changed?

Do the tried and tested loctite fix and forget about it. I don't see a need for
a crank sleeve unless you want to spend $150 for a sleeve instead of $5 for a
bottle of loctite.
