Elvis doesn't feel that fast in isolation. But put the car somewhere you have a
point of reference, and you realize that it's pretty quick. At Laguna, when I'd
get a wave-by from another car, the pass was instant as the car in front just
evaporated. I almost expected some sort of Star Wars hyperspace effect. I think
it's because the torque curve is so flat, the true speed of the car is hidden.
It's fast, but the car doesn't make a big deal about it. It even puts down the
power extremely well coming out of corners.

The Westfield is the opposite. It's fast and it makes very sure you know it.

I guess bikes and the turbo Westie have my accelerometers warped. I
*know* Elvis is really fast, but doesn't feel fast to me. The first time
Teri drove the car on the local kart track she went faster within five
laps (first time she drove the car period, not just first time on track)
than she had gone all day in her fmii mazdaspeed. And she never
shifted...

Frightening in the same way the Sub was the first time I drove it.. like
a caged animal. As I am sure you know from Elvis, it's just the next
level up, and it's a handful to begin with. Plus it's not fully sorted
out so it's interesting to drive to say the least.

Heh, I'll have you know I hit the revlimiter at 5500 TWICE today. :)

I saw a really nice 572 at the parts counter the other day....700+hp
circle track motor, PERFECT for a Miata. ;)

Wally, good to hear your project is up and running. What part of
it is frightening, though? You're not revving it past 5k are you ;-)
and for news of another V8, those of you who made it to the
Laguna Seca event may have seen Elvis hit the trailer early. Turns out
the nicely CNC'd heads were CNC'd a little too far, leaving an aluminum
foil thickness intake port wall. After a few sessions the coolant blew
through into the port, day over. fortunately, the suppliers of the heads
are replacing them for us.
At this point, I think springing for a GMP crate motor would
have been the way to go, not used.
