I had an experience like Pat's about a week before Christmas when I slipped on a snowy sidewalk and as my face hit the pavement, it bounced hard right on my nose, and hit the pavement again. The pain was paralyzing, and it took me a moment to "collect" myself and remember who I was, where I was, and what happened. Before I moved a muscle, I also remembered my own smiling face before I slipped, and went back to that smiling face that I knew. I would have stayed unmoving, face down on the pavement longer but an eighty year old man came out of the tailor shop and I heard him saying in a thick Asian accent, "You OK? You OK?" I started moving again more for him than for me, but I knew that I was finished putting my self image back together in a way that included the face that I saw in the mirror that morning, no blood, bruising or pain.
The tailor reached down for me as I looked up at him and said," Hey - your nose look good. This is so I can hold you now." I thought it was a strange statement, and it brought to mind my demented mother in law's soul insight, "we all hold each other." After what I will call, my adjustment from God, (no mortal man could have done such a thing to me and lived) my overbite has been corrected! There was never any visual evidence of injury on my face, although I couldn't wear glasses for over a month and needed some mortal man adjustments for my neck and back. I also found the need to perfect the art of gentle kissing because, well, OUCH! I agree with Pat. These inexplicable happenings happen at the level of knowing - that include thought and feeling and the physical sensation of a state of perfection or wholeness. In retrospect, I wish I had the time to include that feeling of well being into more than the physical appearance of my face. But I did learn something important, laying on the sidewalk, moving between the one and the many, myself and the tailor, trying to recover myself that day.
