It may be just an interplay between personal self-interest and the interest of the group. This leads to opposing visions with some obvious alignments and feedbacks. Personal self-interest does encourage the accumulation of money (or resources) to exist. The group (society) often reflects that in a way that aligns with personal self interest. This creates a smooth coexistance between the individual and the group. Any change in direction through "spiritual' or other means for the group will meet resistance from the group-individual interest. A possible way to change the larger system is to present a logical argument that it is not in the groups best interest. Its not easy though, because it is written into the laws and policies of the group.
