Most kids (other than those put into prep schools) live fairly equal lives until secondary school, usually attending small schools. Even this doesn't equate to full equality, itself something I don't think possible. What I object to is that there is far more inequality than we need and ridiculous propaganda around about meritocracy when it's obvious even children are groomed very unfairly. We have enough ability to irradicate poverty - but seem to excuse it through various pretences as 'necessary'. What's difficult is disentangling the interests of the already powerful and what money has become as capital and the extent to which we have become functionaries to myth. Technically, we are all equal in the eyes of the law - but we know this isn't really true. Amartyr Sen has recently suggested we don't focus enough on putting small inequalities right on a path to a society that gets used to living without them. Grand ideologies get in the way in my view, largely because we can't spot them in action.
