Here in the US, there are two standards considered when home schooling is approved by school districts. The first is the best interest of the child. The second is the ability of the teacher and the viability of their proposed teaching program. I highly doubt that a paranoid nut parent would pass the scrutiny of the state in approving home schooling, although anything is possible as the parent would have to be highly intelligent with a viable curriculum and the progress of the student would be reviewed regularly.
The children that I have seen home schooled were successful and came out ahead of their peers when they re-entered the system whether in grade school or high school. The decision was made for various reasons. One fifth girl developed an eating disorder and had social problems as a result, being teased etc. She was allowed home schooling by a certified teacher in a program that included psychiatric care. Another boy had been adopted from the Ukraine, was developmentally delayed and socially backward. His mother was a high school teacher for many years, and originally developed a two year program for him, that ended up being a five year program, based on his needs. The program included gradual social inclusion into little league football, baseball and boy scouts. He entered the public school system in seventh grade, knowing some of his school mates from scouts and athletics. I think it is important for our system, with proper over site of the teacher and the child, be allowed to accommodate children who have greater emotional, developmental and social needs, always with the goal of the child re-entering the mainstream with social functionality.
