Sound more and more like a Power Management Issue. Try booting with
'acpi=off' and see if it changes anything. (or maybe disabling power
management in the BIOS might help)
What the MB model? (or the laptop model?).

No, it never hangs while I'm using it and it never hangs if I'm logged
out of the desktop.
For starters, running memtest overnight may give some answers.
I thought about memtest, but I would think that defective memory would
affect it all the time, not just when it's idle.
Also, one could run ssh session on it before the 20 min period
and see what gives.
I've tried that, so far it hasn't hung while I've been ssh'd in, which
is even stranger.
