Are you dual booting the system?  If so, it may be a problem related to the
idle sleep mode.

I have similar problems due to multiboot configuration.

Subject: [MLUG] Ubuntu lucid hanging while idle

Hi,

Since upgrading my desktop to Ubuntu 10.04 I get frequent hangs that can
only be fixed by a hard reset. These hangs only happen when I'm logged
in but not using it. If I go away for 20 mins it's usually ok, If I go
away for longer, either the system hangs completely (can't even ssh in)
or I get logged out.

Here's what I've tried to resolve this:

 * Turn off compiz
 * Set all power management settings to 'Never'
 * Close all applications before leaving my desk
 * Disable screensaver

I've examined the logs, there don't seem to be any clues there.

Anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this? Right now I have to log
out every time I plan to be afk for more than 20 minutes.
