I am coming in late to this party.

I have a HP Pavilion 522n run windows xp home, which I bought for almost
nothing
from a PC recycler a few years.

It ran a year then the installation was corrupted by a virus and I didn't want
to go out an order an original reinstall kit for $60. I install Ubuntu 9.04 on
it and it ran fine for 6 months. 10.4 was now out and I installed that.

That's when the problems started. My symptoms are similar to the description
that I have seen in this thread.

Either on idle or in the middle of using the system the screen would go black.
No amount of poking keys or the mouse would wake it.

The only detail that may be significant was that pressing the power button
cause
a shutdown with the Ubuntu logo
and the small marquee dots. This tells me the system is not hard frozen but
it
is definitely non-responsive.

I have played with several screen saver and power management settings to no
avail.
I also search on the net and did not find much on the issue.

Suggestions?
