Anyway there are 99% chances it is either a kernel or Xorg driver issue.
I suggest you do the following experiment on Ubuntu 10.04 if you feel
comfortable with tricking your system: Install the maverick kernel backport.
If this is a kernel issue, there are chances it is resolved in this one.
Be careful on the long term as this kernel is not tagged ready for production 
yet.

- Add the Ubuntu Kernel PPA
  % sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
  % sudo apt-get update

- Install the kernel suitable to your machine
  % sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick

Things could be tricky if you have fglrx or nvidia drivers, but I tested
this on both without compilation issue.
