SA: I had Ant in mind when mentioning philosophy and the academy going together, and I think most people today studying and writing philosophy are associated with a college or university. But that aside, Pirsig, Rand and other philosophical thinkers who were not faculty members still required funds in order to pursue their vocation, as do the vast majority of people other than those soley dependent on others for their food, shelter and clothing, like your clientele. Maybe there are some serious philosophers among such groups, but if so they would be the exception rather than the rule. But, I could be wrong.
