[Platt]
Pirsig knows as well as anyone that pure intellectual pursuits such as
philosophy are made possible by those in society who "make money."

[Marsha]
Sorry Platt, but you don't know what Pirsig knows. You saying so doesn't make
it true. Do you have proof for this opinion?

[Arlo]
Especially because it is an inane statement. "Making money" is necessary to
survive in a capitalist economy, but it is not a prerequisite for "intellectual
pursuits such as philosophy", as a simple look back through history would show.

Now, _social patterns_ in the larger sense, I'd agree, _are_ a prerequisite for
the emergence of intellectual patterns. But "capitalism" is only one of many
possible social patterns, which has nothing to do with the quality of intellect
that follows.

This is just more of that "normative" propaganda mentioned earlier. Say
something in passing like it is fact, and it gives it an aura of being factual.
You are right to call it out.

But then, I'm just a lying, deceitful, commie, anti-freedom "lib". Since only
conservatives tell the truth, you can ignore anything I say and listen to
Limbaugh instead.
