Hi David, Hmmm ... bit of a context problem here. Clearly yes.
Let's back up a mo. I was saying there is very little to distinguish the social and intellectual levels - very little that's hard and fast defintionally ... other than perhaps - the dominance of concvention and authority at the social end. Almost all the evolutionary processes and mechanisms in the socio-politico-intellectual continuum are the same, and yes these include cooperation as well as competition amongst memes (information replicators) just like the living (biological) level depends on those same bag of mechanisms amongst the genes (information replicators). So back to the specific satement ... Authority and convention can indeed incorporate "cooperation" - but it's a matter of history - the convention may include cooperation, but is accepted as right by conventional authority, simply forgetting whether the convention arose from either a habit or a rationale of cooperation, and is now used socially without questioning the rationalization. In the same way as authority / convention / habit dominate at the social end, questioning dominates at the intellectual end. But even questioning cannot always link a chain of reasoning to "first cause" so there is always a social element to intellect, a point of instinctual or delegated trust & habit that needn't be questioned (in the current pragmatic context). To do so is called analysis paralysis. Ooops ... dunno where that came from.
