Intellect's purpose is to control - check - social VALUE (the term
"society" is a bit ambiguous). All levels' purpose is to break free from
the former level's limitations and in this process the former is seen as
evil, Life (biology) abhors death ("inorgany"), but society abhors
biology's "dog eats dog" existence just as much and intellect dislikes
(to say it mildly) society's relentless pressure the individual to toe the
common cause (my society right or wrong). Pro termo the islamist vs
western value is the most prominent social/intellectual front.
However what Pirsig circles round in LILA is intellect exaggerating its
job and that the intellect-steeped Western World will saw over the
branch it is sitting on. Social value can't be controlled unto destruction
lest existence slips back to the biological jungle that social value is a
shore against. This happens because intellect doesn't know its role as
a MOQ level - the levels are blind to anything but its own value - it
operates as how reality REALLY is - as SOM. The MOQ will set things
right by stripping intellect of its "M" rank and relegate it its proper place
as MOQ's 4th level where it is safely domesticated.
To exceed my "jurisdiction" I will say that it is wrong to force-feed
intellects's values (freedom in a modern democratic sense) on parts of
the world where social value (Islam) is still a greater freedom than the
dog-eats-dog existence of war-lords and such. IMO training camps in
Afghanistan or Somalia or Sudan for Al Qeada is not important, its the
new security measurements (back to a necessary social pattern) in the
West that has foiled all terror attempts. Intellect's advance is
guaranteed in the long run. But to see this context a correct
interpretation of the MOQ is required and THAT is a tougher job.
